MATTHIAS MAUTE
Known for his stunning blend of
dazzling virtuosity and colorful expressivity,
Matthias Maute is recognized as one of the foremost recorder players of
his
generation, and has earned an international reputation for his
formidable
talents as a traverso player as well as a composer.
After finishing his studies
in Freiburg and Utrecht with Baldrick Deerenberg
and Marion Verbruggen, Mr.Maute was awarded first prize in the
prestigious
Musica Antiqua Competition in Bruges, Belgium (1990). That same year
his CD
Les Barricades, which includes some of his own works, was released. His
compositions have been published with Amadeus, Moeck, Mieroprint, Carus
and
Ascolta. Miserere, his double concerto for viola, cello and orchestra
was premiered
in Boston in 2002.A founding member of Trio Passagio, with whom he won
the
chamber music competition of the Dutch Impresariat (1993) he is
artistic director
of Ensemble Caprice, with which he shares the spotlight with his wife
and duo
partner, the recorder and traverso player Sophie Lariviere.Much in
demand as a
teacher at workshops in the U.S. and in Europe, he has been featured at
early music
festivals around the world, including those of Utrecht, Bruges, Berlin,
Kassel, Schwetzingen,
Stuttgart, Avignon, Amherst and Berkeley. Mr. Maute teaches recorder at
McGill University in Montreal, and has recently written a book on
improvisation on
the recorder. He can be heard on Vanguard Classics, Antes Editions,
Column Classics,
ATMA and Dorian Recordings.
